We spoke to Nick from the Mad Dogs Crazy Cats Pet Store

Tell us about your store and team?

We opened on January 4th this year. I run the shop on my own with my wife, Ann, who joins me on Saturdays and Sundays.

How did you get started in the pet industry?

We initially did pop-up events at local and national County Fayres, and local community events. We got fed up with the weather playing havoc with our events, so we decided it was time for a bricks and mortar shop.

Do you have any pets?

We have five dogs - a 12-year-old German Shephard, a 2.5-year-old Australian Shepherd, a 2.5-year-old English Springer Spaniel, a 2-year-old Welsh Collie and an 8-month-old Cocker Spaniel. Plus we have two 9-year-old cats!

How do you stand out from the crowd?

Our aim is that every customer who comes in gets the same attention, whether they are spending 50p or £100, and we try to get to know their needs for their furkids and guide them down what is best for their pets, whilst keeping an eye on the costs too.

What do you feed your pets?

We mainly feed a raw diet for the dogs, supplemented with kibble and occasional treats. The cats are both on a high-quality tinned food with kibble, too. We mainly feed our pets Durham Raw in various flavours, though we avoid chicken as Maya has an allergy to it. They also get to try Naked Dog, Dougies and Bulmer Raw. Then, the kibble tends to be Symply Range Lamb.

Get to know your customers and their needs. Treat everyone with respect and listen to their concerns. Guide them to what's best for their needs and the needs of their pets.

What is the most frequently asked question from your customers?

How much raw should we be feeding a day? The answer is 2 to 3% of body weight, and we encourage people to bring their dogs in and weigh them on our scales. We can then do a proper, prepared plan.

What are the biggest challenges for your customers?

Footfall. We are in a village and really need to get the social media and online side of the business up.

Tell us your best (family friendly) animal joke?

What happens when it rains cats and dogs?

You can step in a poodle!

What's your best selling product?

There are several good sellers: Durham Raw, Symply Kibble, and our pick-your-own raw treats, such as rabbit ears.

What do you think is the best new product of the year?

Jolly Balls are going down well with those we have recommended them to. Whilst we have yet to find a truly indestructable dog toy, the Jolly Balls are very robust and even when handles are chewed off or a dog's teeth have gone through them, they remain a usable toy.

What trends are you seeing come through?

Raw will continue to grow, and the need for eco-friendly products for worming and flea control rather than chemical-based medicines.
